Though Radium Girls ranges from 1918 through the 1940’s, the bulk of the narrative is centered on events in New Jersey in the mid 1920’s..

Within a decade, all of the original radium girls were dead, all suffering from radium-related sequelae such as anemia, bone fractures, jaw infection, and even sarcomas . It would be natural to suppose that this celebrated case brought an end to the use of radium in commercial products such as watches, and business did tail off substantially in the 1930s. “Radium Girls” transports us to that time: In Orange, New Jersey, in 1925, sisters Josephine and Bessie work for the company American Radium (standing in for the real United States Radium Corporation, which operated from 1914 to 1970). The United States Radium Corporation was aware of the dangers of radium and had the responsibility to tell their employees of these dangers, but they neglected to do so. This lead to an astonishing amount of health issues and deaths.
